LG560: LATIN II. Jerome T. Costello.
DESCRIPTION:
- This course is a continuation of LG559, building on the foundation
established in LG559. Emphasis will be on advanced grammar, further preparation
for the graduate language examination in the form of selected texts reflecting
early Church history and theology, and, above all, an overview of Latin
classical/patristic culture. The literature of medieval writers will also be
read.
RELEVANCE FOR MINISTRY:
- The summum bonum of Ecclesiastical Latin studies, is the
reading, analysis (translation) and appreciation of Church Latin which is found
in Jerome's Biblia Vulgata, Augustine's De Trinitate, and
Ambrose's hymns, to name a few works of early Christian literature. The
well-versed pastor/theologian/scholar should be able to read and translate
early and medieval Christian Latin works without relying on the translations
and interpretations of others.
COURSE FORMAT:
- This course meets for two hours once a week. Thus considerable
outside study and preparation is expected of students.

ASSIGNMENTS:
- Students will be responsible for translating exercises from the
text, some orally, some in writing. Longer additional pieces will be translated
in writing. All work submitted will be assessed and graded.
PREREQUISITES:
- LG559 Latin I. No audits without transcript evidence of prior
study.
