PR500: HOMILETICA. Pablo A. Deiros.
DESCRIPTION:
- Primarily this is a course on the preparation of sermons. It is
designed to enable the students to appreciate the joy of preaching the good
news of Jesus Christ! A study will be made of the nature and importance of
preaching and the principles of sermon construction. Attention will be given to
the selection and interpretation of the text and the formulation of the sermon
idea. Sermon objectives will be defined and discussed. Guidance will be given
in the development of the material and the arrangement of the sermon structure.
Time will be given to the improvement of the sermon style and to a study and
practice of principles for sermon delivery.
RELEVANCE FOR MINISTRY:
- Preaching is an important aspect of the pastoral ministry within
the church; and skill in preaching is expected of the great majority of those
called to pastoral positions, as well as of evangelists and many other servants
of Christ.
COURSE FORMAT:
- Class time will be divided between lectures presented by the
professor and practical presentations by the students. The class will meet
weekly on Tuesday mornings from 8:00-9:50 and 10:50-12:15.

ASSIGNMENTS:
- Reading materials from the textbooks and from the suggested
bibliography will be assigned for each class session. Students will prepare and
preach two sermons based on biblical materials selected by the professor. There
will be written assignments related to the reading and to the sermons. Grading
will be based on written and oral assignments. Poor attendance will affect
grades.
PREREQUISITES:
- NE502 and Spanish.
RELATIONSHIP TO CURRICULUM:
- Meets M.Div. core requirement in Preaching and Communication (MIN
2).
