LG559: LATIN I. Jerome T. Costello.
DESCRIPTION:
- This course introduces the student to the essentials of
Ecclesiastical Latin grammar, vocabulary, syntax, and morphology leading to the
development of the student's competence and confidence in translating Latin
texts of limited complexity.
RELEVANCE FOR MINISTRY:
- The summum bonum of Ecclesiastical Latin studies, is the
reading, analysis (translation) and appreciation of Church Latin which is found
in Jerome's Biblia Vulgata, Augustine's De Trinitate, and
Ambrose's hymns, to name a few works of early Christian literature. The
well-versed pastor/theologian/scholar should be able to read and translate
early and medieval Christian Latin works without relying on the translations
and interpretations of others.
COURSE FORMAT:
- This course meets for two hours once a week. Most of the class time
will be devoted to learning the structure of Latin and the techniques of
translation.

- Regular assignments will be made from both the textbook and
handouts.
PREREQUISITES:
- Sound foundation in English grammar and/or Koine Greek is
desirable. No audits without transcript evidence of prior study.
