SP502: THE ART OF SPIRITUAL DIRECTION. Gary Sattler.


DESCRIPTION:

This seminar combines both the Art of Spiritual Direction and the Advanced Spiritual Direction practica. The theoretical bases of spiritual direction will be examined in lectures and discussions; techniques of spiritual direction will be examined in a case conference setting.

RELEVANCE FOR MINISTRY:
For those called to spiritual direction as a role in ministry, this course provides integration of theory and practice and an exploration of the participants' own experiences in the spiritual direction setting, as well as their ongoing relationships with God.

COURSE FORMAT:
Lectures, discussion, and case conferences. The seminar will meet Monday afternoons for three hours for occasional lectures and discussion of readings, and regular case presentations.

ASSIGNMENTS:
Grades will be based on seminar attendance and participation, as well as a short (8-10 page) paper due Friday of finals week.

PREREQUISITES:
Students must be accepted into the Spirituality/Spiritual Direction concentration and have completed the first year of that concentration (SP501, SP581/582/583).

RELATIONSHIP TO CURRICULUM:
Meets concentration requirement for Spirituality/Spiritual Direction concentration of M.A. and M.Div.
