PR519: PREACHING IN THE DEAF CHURCH. Rick McClain.


DESCRIPTION:

This class will attempt to provide applicable tools for the student to be prepared in preaching to the Deaf, and to understand the sermon development process leading from design and development to the delivery of the sermon.

RELEVANCE FOR MINISTRY:
More and more denominations are opening their doors for the development of Deaf ministries. Within these doors are potential Deaf churches, or services that are geared specifically for the Deaf. The pastor/preacher of the Deaf will be best suited to develop tools of sermon development and application.

COURSE FORMAT:
The course will consist of lecture and practical applications of material discussed in class. Discussion will center upon the development and delivery of sermons for the Deaf. Particular emphasis will be placed upon the different types of sermons and their practical purpose in the Deaf congregation. The student will show understanding of these purposes in their writing and videotaped sermon delivery which will be analyzed and critiqued in class.

Wilson, Paul Scott. The Practice of Preaching. Nashville: Abingdon Press, 1995.
A minimum of 1000 pages, including the three books above and the student's choice of material in completion of the written report, "Preaching to the Deaf."

ASSIGNMENTS:
The course grade is dependent upon the student's attendance; submission of a reading report; a written report on "Preaching to the Deaf"; an evaluation of the student's videotaped sermon; and a final examination based upon the content of classroom lectures.

PREREQUISITES:
Fluency in American Sign Language.
