CH561: RUSSIAN SPIRITUALITY AND EVANGELICAL CHRISTIANITY. Sergei I. Nikolaev.


DESCRIPTION:

This course provides an introduction to the rich history and heritage of Russian spirituality, as well as exploring the roots of evangelical development (Russian Protestantism) within the Russian Orthodox context. The course will give a wide survey of spiritual formation and development of the evangelical Christians in Russia up to the present, post-communist era.

RELEVANCE FOR MINISTRY:
The course will help students understand the influence of Russian Orthodox theological thought in the development of the evangelical movement and Russia's spiritual awakening in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Students will be made aware of how Russian Protestantism relates to the world-wide mission movement and today's ever-changing global realities.

COURSE FORMAT:
Intensive, two-week course, with lectures for the first nine sessions and a seminar for the last session. Class will meet daily from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

ASSIGNMENTS:
  1. Attendance at all the lectures in order to qualify for a positive grade.

  2. One response paper (3 pages or less) for each day of lectures.

  3. Small group presentation and defense of a collective paper (30 minutes maxium) on the last day of class.
