PR520: PREACHING FROM JEREMIAH. Marguerite Shuster.
(2 Units. May be taken only in conjunction with OT516: Jeremiah.)

DESCRIPTION:

This preaching practicum is designed not only to give students experience in preaching, but also to clarify how the preacher's exegetical work shapes and is expressed in the sermon. Therefore, ALL STUDENTS ENROLLED IN THIS PRACTICUM MUST BE ENROLLED AT THE SAME TIME IN OT516: JEREMIAH. Professors of the two classes will normally attend both classes to facilitate integration of the tasks of exegesis and sermon preparation. Enrollment will be limited to nine students. Each will preach twice on assigned texts from Jeremiah. All sermons will be videotaped.

RELEVANCE FOR MINISTRY:
The spoken word remains a primary means of communicating the gospel of Jesus Christ. Preaching is an essential element in the ministry of the church; and skill in preaching is expected of the great majority of those called to pastoral positions, as well as of evangelists and many other servants of Christ. That preaching faithfully reflect the biblical witness on which it is based is obviously essential.

COURSE FORMAT:
The class will meet two consecutive hours per week. The first hour will be devoted to worship involving the hearing of two sermons preached by members of the class. The second hour will be spent in discussion of the sermons and reflection on relevant exegetical issues, with the class and both preaching and Old Testament professors participating. PLEASE NOTE: Class attendance is mandatory. If the class is over-subscribed, the first two persons on the waiting list should attend the first class session.

REQUIRED READING:
Reading assigned in OT516 is required, and relevant sections must be completed before sermons preached on those texts, even if texts assigned in PR520 and lectures related to those texts in OT516 should get out of sync.

ASSIGNMENTS:
Two sermons preached during the quarter, with outlines and indication of the commentaries consulted submitted in writing. Regular class attendance, preparation for class, and participation in discussions are required.

PREREQUISITES:
PR500, and concurrent registration in OT516: Jeremiah.

RELATIONSHIP TO CURRICULUM:
Meets M. Div. core requirement in Preaching and Communication (MIN 2).

FINAL EXAMINATION:
None.
