LG502A/B: BEGINNING HEBREW. Michael R. Beetley.

DESCRIPTION:

This two-quarter course provides an introduction to Biblical Hebrew which will enhance the student's exegesis of the Old Testament. The student will be given a descriptive overview of the language, and will be expected to master its fundamental features. Students will also be introduced to basic grammatical and lexical reference tools.

RELEVANCE FOR MINISTRY:

If thorough knowledge of the scriptures is essential for the minister, understanding them in their original languages must be considered of great importance. To this end, familiarity with Hebrew will provide the minister with an invaluable resource for exegesis of the Old Testament, critical use of advanced study tools and commentaries, and evaluation of English translations.

COURSE FORMAT:

The course will meet twice weekly, two hours per session, during both Fall (LG502A) and Winter (LG502B) quarters.

ASSIGNMENTS:

Exercises will be assigned from the Grammar on a regular basis. There will be frequent announced quizzes and tests, given in class. The emphasis will be on encouraging mastery of the most important material by continuous practice and review.

PREREQUISITES:

None.

RELATIONSHIP TO CURRICULUM:

Two-course sequence meets M. Div. core requirement in Hebrew (HEB).
