NS558/NT858: LITURGICAL ELEMENTS IN THE NEW TESTAMENT. Ralph P. Martin.


DESCRIPTION:

This seminar, intended for graduate students, provides a forum for in-depth consideration, research, and study of the parts of the New Testament that patently arose in the Early Church's worshipping life. These include confessional materials, hymnic sections, baptismal reminders, and eucharistic celebrations. Attention is also given to prayer speech and doxologies.

RELEVANCE FOR MINISTRY:
The items listed above will serve as guides and correctives to the modern church's worship patterns, though the chief aim of the seminar is academic and only indirectly practical/pastoral.

COURSE FORMAT:
During the fall quarter, 1996, the class will meet once a week, with personalized tutorials and reading sessions provided for those who enroll. Thursday, Sept. 26, 1996 is the first seminar
(3-5 p.m.).

A major essay will be written, with the possibility of oral presentation to be assigned during the seminar. Assignments will be adjusted for master level students.

PREREQUISITES:
Open to a limited number of M.Div./M.A. students, with written permission of instructor.
