LG559
Steinberg
LG559: LATIN I. Marian Steinberg.
DESCRIPTION:
- This course is of elementary Latin designed to equip students to
translate the works of early and medieval church authors. The course will
emphasize Latin structure, but will also include study of the Greek elements
which distinguish Classical Latin from ecclesiastical.
RELEVANCE FOR MINISTRY:
- While adequate translations of early Christian Latin works are by
no means unavailable, the better prepared minister/theologian/scholar must
never be at the mercy of another's interpretation. Many standard reference
works do not translate Latin citations, leaving their users to do their own
translations or be excluded from the understanding of the original citation. A
better comprehension of the thinking and intellectual milieu of the historical
period into which Christianity was born can be had for the study of "a little
Latin."
COURSE FORMAT:
- This course meets for two hours a week. Most of the class time will
be devoted to learning the structure of Latin and the techniques of
translation.
REQUIRED READING:
- Collins, John F. A Primer of Ecclesiastical Latin.
Washington, D.C.: Catholic University of American Press, 1985.
- A Latin dictionary. Small, pocket dictionaries are not acceptable.
RECOMMENDED READING:
- Biblia Vulgata.
ASSIGNMENTS:
- Regular assignments will be made from both the textbook and
handouts.
PREREQUISITES:
- An ability to use English grammar will make learning Latin
easier.
RELATIONSHIP TO CURRICULUM:
- Elective.
FINAL EXAMINATION:
- An exam similar to the proficiency exam will be given to enable
students to measure their competency.
