Mouw & van der Kooi

ST563: CREATION, PROVIDENCE, AND KINGDOM DISCERNMENT (4 Units: 161 hours). Richard J. Mouw & Cornelis van der Kooi.

DESCRIPTION: This course will focus on the ways in which theologians, especially those in the Reformed-Presbyterian tradition, haveunderstood and debated about God's unfolding purposes in history: in creating the world, in the workings of divine providence in our fallen creation, and in the calling of Christians to discern andalign ourselves with, the goals of the coming Kingdom in our present patterns of discipleship.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to (1) define and contrast various theological approaches to divine providence; (2) develop a basic familiarity with how history has been read theologically by a selection of Reformed theologians including perspectives from those on the margins; (3) evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the resources some theologians have identified to be used for discerning God’s actions in history; (4) critically assess diverse theologies that have challenged traditional understandings of where and how God is at work in the world; (5) explain the tension that exists between the freedom of the human being and God’s interaction in the world.

COURSE FORMAT: This class meets once per week for three hour sessions for a total of 30 hours of classroom instruction for lecture and discussion plus 10 hours of directed learning activities for a total of 40 instructional hours.
