ST582: EVANGELICAL PERSPECTIVES ON WOMEN’S THEOLOGIES (4 Units: 160 hours). Linda D. Peacore.


DESCRIPTION: This course provides an introduction to women’s theologies, including feminist, womanist, mujerista, and Asian American theologies as well as global feminist perspectives outside North America. The course will familiarize students with the methodology and primary themes treated by feminist theologians, engaging these through the lens of traditional Christian doctrines, and evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of feminist method and theology.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Students who complete ST582 will demonstrate (1) a basic theological knowledge of a variety of women’s theologies and their contribution to Christian theology; (2) a competence in interpreting and evaluating a diverse range of feminist theological perspectives; and (3) an appre­ciation of women’s theologies and how these shape their own theological reflection and ministries.

COURSE FORMAT: This is a hybrid course, meaning that it is a ten-week course with nine weeks of online instruction and one week of classroom instruction during week seven of the quarter. The week of classroom instruction will include four hours daily of lecture and discussion. Classroom and online instruction will include lecture and discussion for a total of 40 instructional hours.

ASSIGNMENTS AND ASSESSMENT:

  1. Approximately 1,100 pages of required reading to be recorded in reading log (10%). [This assignment is related to learning outcome #1] [74 hours].
  2. This course will be conducted through both the Internet and Pasadena class meetings. Course content will be offered in online material and activities throughout the quarter in addition to face-to-face class sessions. [40 hours].
  3. Regular discussion forum posts and responses, and other online activities (25%). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes #1-3] [10 hours].
  4. One book review and oral presentation on selected text [1,000-1,250 words] (30%). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes #1-3] [12 hours].
  5. Final research paper on a topic related to the class in order to demonstrate critically reflective praxis for transformational discipleship, mission, and ministry [2,000-2,500 words] (35%). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes #1-3] [24 hours].

RELATIONSHIP TO CURRICULUM: Option to meet the TH4 or C5 requirement in the 120 MDiv and 80 MAT Programs (Fall 2015).
