NE517: NEW TESTAMENT BOOK STUDY: 2 Corinthians (4 Units: 160 hours). Jim Davis.


DESCRIPTION: A detailed study of the context and content of the canonical text of 2 Corinthians based on the English text. Appropriate interpretive methods will be introduced and employed to enable the student to understand the meaning and continuing significance of this letter for personal discipleship and ministry within the church.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Having successfully completed this course, students will have demonstrated the ability (1) to interpret 2 Corinthians within its socio-historical, literary, rhetorical and canonical contexts; (2) to identify central issues in the critical study of the letter; (3) to articulate primary theological and ethical concerns of the letter; and (4) to use English based language tools for interpreting and understanding the text; and (5) to interpret this text for faithful use of Scripture in their own lives and ministries.

COURSE FORMAT: This class meets daily as a two-week intensive for three-hour sessions for a total of 30 hours. The course format includes lecture and discussion plus 10 hours of directed learning activities for a total of 40 instructional hours. Students will learn through lecture, large and small group discussion, video presentation and their own work in class and outside class in DLAs.

ASSIGNMENTS AND ASSESSMENT:

  1. 750 pages of required reading and completion of a “reading log.” (5% of the final grade). The log should report assigned readings pages read as a percentage of pages assigned. [This assignment is related to learning outcomes 1-5] [50 hours].
  2. Completion of a “reading journal.” (25% of the final grade). The journal should interact with the assigned reading describing 1) what the student found enlightening or challenging in the reading, 2) what was found particularly helpful for understanding the text of 2 Corinthians, and 3) why it was found helpful. The journal should contain an entry of 2 pages double-spaced for each week’s assigned reading or 40 pages in total. [This assignment is related to learning outcomes 1-5.] [40 hours].
  3. Completion of a 5-page interpretive paper on a text from 2 Corinthians assigned by the professor. (30% of the final grade). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes 1-3] [10 hours including 5 hours of DLAs].
  4. Completion of a 10-page research and interpretation paper on a text from 2 Corinthians chosen by the student. (40% of the final grade). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes 1-5]. [30 hours including 5 hours of DLAs].

PREREQUISITES: BI500 or NE502; NT500 or NS500 or NS501.

RELATIONSHIP TO CURRICULUM: Counts as a biblical elective for the 120 MDiv, 80 MAT, and 80 MATM Programs (Fall 2015). Meets the NTBK requirement for the MAT Program (Winter 2010).

FINAL EXAMINATION: None.
