MH526: CHRISTIANITY IN CHINA, KOREA, AND JAPAN (4 Units: 160 Units). Scott W. Sunquist.

DESCRIPTION: During the 20th century Christianity, an Asian religion, finally became resident in East Asia as an Asian religion. The countries of Korea, Japan, and China have common cultural threads but diverse trajectories that have shaped Christian development in particular ways. This course studies some of those developments of Christianity in East Asia as distinct from the West (although in dialog with the West) and as distinct from South Asia.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon successful completion of this course students will (1) have demonstrated the ability to articulate various influences of western missions on the development of Christianity in each of the three countries; (2) have given a brief autobiography (explaining the significance for Christian development) of two or more influential Christian leaders from one or more of the countries; (3) have demonstrated the role of western colonial governments in the development of Christianity in East Asia; (4) have demonstrated the impact of Japanese imperialism, communism, and global trade on the development of Christianity in East Asia; and (5) have explained the interplay between Christian development between the three countries.
