CN524: FAMILY DYNAMICS OF ADDICTION (4 Units: 160 hours). Matthew Russell.


DESCRIPTION: This course will provide foundational concepts of family systems theory within an examination of the impact of substance abuse and addiction on the family system as well as the influence of familial factors and family dynamics on addiction and the process of recovery.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to (1) articulate the current understanding of addiction and how this knowledge impacts the family system and communities; (2) explain personal/familial factors of addiction and be able to highlight those personal and familial factors that contribute to substance abuse, addiction, and recovery; (3) identify the effects of abuse and addiction on individuals and family members, including a personal application as it applies to the individual, their families, and their communities; (4) articulate definitions and descriptions of the addicted person, as well as roles of other family members; and (5) explain recovery as a family process impacting all members and be able to describe the research based developmental process/model of recovery within a family systems framework.

COURSE FORMAT: This class meets daily as a two-week intensive for three hour sessions for a total of 30 hours of classroom instruction for lecture and discussion plus 10 hours of directed learning activities for a total of 40 instructional hours.

ASSIGNMENTS AND ASSESSMENT:

  1. Attend 30 hours of class time [30 hours]
  2. 1064 pages of required reading. Submit a reading log noting insights, perceptions related to ministry, counseling practice and personal family life. (30% of total). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes # 1-5]. [70 hours].  
  3. Create a three-generational genogram of your family system. The project will be accompanied with a 3-page paper defining roles, and concepts discussed in class showing a high level of personal insight into the family system. (20% of total) [This assignment is related to learning outcomes #1-5]. [10 hours]
  4. Choose three out of these four movies and write three 2-page essays choosing relationships as a case study related to the family dynamics of addiction: Being Flynn, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, Marvin’s Room, When a Man Loves a Women. (10% of total). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes #1-5]. [10 hours].
  5. Attend 3 Al-anon meetings and write a 5- page reflection paper based upon questions that will be given in class. (10% of total). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes #1-5]. [10 hours]
  6. Write a research essay on an assigned topic [2,000 words] (30%). [This assignment is related to learning outcome #1-5]. [30 hours].
