NE527: NEW TESTAMENT EXEGESIS: GOSPEL OF JOHN (4 Units: 160 hours). Marianne Meye Thompson.


DESCRIPTION: This course is an exegetical study of the Gospel of John, which includes interpretation of selected passages of the Greek text with lecture and discussion of the basic themes of the Gospel.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Having successfully completed this course, students will have demonstrated the ability (1) to interpret the Gospel of Johnwithin its socio-historical, literary, and canonical contexts; (2) to identify central issues in the critical study of the Gospel of John; (3) to articulate primary theological and ethical concerns of the Gospel of John; and (4) to use Greek based language tools for interpreting the text; and (5) to interpret this text for faithful use of Scripture in their own lives and ministries.

COURSE FORMAT: This class meets twice weekly for two hour sessions for a total of 40 instructional hours in the classroom for lecture and discussion.

ASSIGNMENTS AND ASSESSMENT:

  1. Instructional classroom hours [40 hours].

  2. Preparation for each meeting of the course by carefully reading the assigned texts in the Gospel of John, and comparing one’s observations with at least one of the required commentaries [50 hours].

  3. Written response to one of the essays on reserve (2 pages; 10%). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes 2 and 3.] [10 hours]

  4. Submission of observations and questions on 6 passages, other than those completed for the interpretive exercises (250 words each; 20%). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes 1, 2, and 4.] [15 hours]

  5. Two interpretive exercises on selected passages (1300 words each) (40%). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes 1, 2, and 4.] [20 hours].
  6. Final exegesis paper on a passage in the Gospel of John (2500 words; 30%). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes 1, 2, 3, and 4.] [25 hours].

PREREQUISITES: LG510 or LG512A/B or LG512; BI500 or NE502; NT500 or NS500 or NS501.

RELATIONSHIP TO CURRICULUM: Meets the Biblical Language Exegesis requirement in the 120 MDiv program. Meets the NTE in the 144 MDiv Program.
