YF502: LEADING CHANGE THROUGH YOUTH MINISTRY CONTEXTS (4 Units: 160 hours). Steven Argue, PhD.
DESCRIPTION: The course teaches students to engage in organizational change through congregations and organizations that lead young people, volunteers, and parents. Students will learn to apply leadership frames by exploring and integrating resources from leadership, youth ministry, church, and cultural categories. Topics will include the meaning of being a Christian leader; how to effectively approach leadership challenges in ministry; how to create a volunteer culture; how to lead students and parents; how to lead, equip, and best utilize interns and paid staff; and how to think systemically about one’s role as an advocate for young people in the broader community context.
LEARNING OUTCOMES: Students will be able to (1) assess and develop their personal theology of Christian leadership; (2) know and use various leadership frames to address leadership challenges; (3) apply leadership principles specifically for youth ministry contexts to help them assess current practices and lead change; (4) articulate a complete volunteer leadership development approach; and (5) identify and assess their cultural intelligence competencies so as to critically reflect on how their cultural identities and their ministry contexts impact their leadership approaches.
COURSE FORMAT: This class meets twice weekly for two hour sessions for a total of 40 instructional hours in the classroom in the form of lectures, regular discussion, and in-class or online peer learning.
