TH836/536: THE THEOLOGY OF JÜRGEN MOLTMANN (4 Units: 190 hours, 6 Units: 403 Hours). Veli-Matti Kärkkäinen.
DESCRIPTION: This doctoral seminar (open to a maximum of five advanced master’s level students) studies the constructive theology of Jürgen Moltmann in the context of contemporary theology at the international and ecumenical levels.
SIGNIFICANCE FOR LIFE AND MINISTRY: Studying Moltmann’s main works is a great way not only to understand more thoroughly the theology of a leading international theologian but also to learn more about key themes, debates, and issues in contemporary constructive theology.
LEARNING OUTCOMES: Having successfully completed this seminar, students will have demonstrated their ability (1) to locate Moltmann’s theological program in its historical and contemporary location; (2) to understand and articulate leading theological themes and their distinctive features in Moltmann; (3) to discern Moltmann’s approach to and method of doing systematic theology; (4) to analyze critically and sympathetically Moltmann’s contribution to constructive theology, including the assessment of its liabilities.
COURSE FORMAT: This class meets once per week for three hour sessions for a total of 30 hours of classroom instruction for theological discussion and reflection facilitated by students and occasional guest presenters plus 10 hours of directed learning activities for a total of 40 instructional hours.

PREREQUISITES: For advanced master’s level students, written permission of the professor. Generally all ST courses, most CH and NT/OT courses, as well as a PHIL course, are required.
