LG806/506: ADVANCED HEBREW GRAMMAR. (4 Units: 163 Hours). Leslie Allen.


DESCRIPTION: This course investigates the morphology and syntax of Biblical Hebrew. Its approach is largely synchronic, but includes diachronic elements. Grammatical study will be enhanced by relevant reading from Old Testament texts.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon successful completion of this course, students will have demonstrated (1) an advanced understanding of Biblical Hebrew; (2) the ability to use reference grammars as part of the exegetical process; (3) competency in understanding a range of Old Testament texts.

COURSE FORMAT: This class meets twice weekly for two-hour sessions for a total of 40 instructional hours in the classroom for lectures and discussion of material read in preparation.

ASSIGNMENTS AND ASSESSMENT:

  2. A 1,000-word mid-term paper on the morphology of a prescribed text (25%). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes 1 and 2]. [8 hours].

  3. A 1,5000-word end-of-term paper on the morphology and grammar of another prescribed text (40%). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes 1 and 2]. [12 hours].

PREREQUISITES: LG502 and LG502B or written permission of the instructor. No audits.

RELATIONSHIP TO CURRICULUM: Elective. Option to count in the Ancient Near Eastern Studies emphasis, Ancient Context of the Old Testament emphasis, and for the ThM and PhD degrees.

FINAL EXAMINATION: None.
