NT500: New Testament Introduction (in Korean; 4 Units: 160 hours). Jin Ki Hwang.


DESCRIPTION: New Testament Introduction orients students to the literature of the New Testament in its various literary, historical, and theological contexts and to New Testament interpretation in service of Christian practice.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Having successfully completed this course students will have demonstrated that they; (1) have an introductory knowledge of the literature, history, and theology of the New Testament; (2) can identify a range of questions (e.g., historical, literary, canonical) that might be addressed to particular New Testament texts and can explore those questions in the process of interpreting particular New Testament texts; (3) are able to take into account the varied contexts of both the biblical materials and their contemporary interpreters; and (4) can read the New Testament in ways that foster faithful Christian practice.

COURSE FORMAT: The course meets once per week for three and a half hour session over the ten week quarter for a total of 35 hours of classroom instruction for lectures and regular discussion plus 5 hours of directed learning activities such as engaging in forums, etc.

REQUIRED READING: 754 total number pages required.

The entire NT in Korean (using the Korean Revised Version or New Korean Standard Bible) or in English (using the NRS, TNIV, or CEB) [260 pp. approximately].

ASSIGNMENTS AND ASSESSMENT:

  2. Submission of five 1-page journals on weekly reading assignment and engaging in online forums based on weekly reading assignment (25%) [This assignment is related to learning outcomes #1-4; writing: 10 hours; online forums: 5 hours].

  3. Completion of two 5- to 8-page papers: (1) a paper on one of the topics that will be provided in class (e.g., women in the Gospel tradition) (25%); (2) an exegetical paper, dealing with major exegetical and theological issues in a passage chosen from a list that will be provided in class (25%) [This assignment is related to learning outcomes # 1-4; 30 hours].

  4. FINAL exam covering readings and lecture (25%). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes # 1-4; 15 hours].

PREREQUISITES: None.

RELATIONSHIP TO CURRICULUM: Meets the core requirement in the 120 MDiv Program and the core requirement for MATM, MAICS, and MACL Programs (Winter 2010).
