NE567: Luke (English Text) (4 Units: 120 hours). Timothy W. Reardon.


DESCRIPTION: This course is an English text, exegetical study of Luke’s Gospel, investigating major theological themes, the narrative development of Luke as a whole, and interpreting individual passages with reference to their literary, historical, and socio-cultural contexts.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon successful completion of this course, students will have demonstrated (1) knowledge of the structure, content, and main themes of the Gospel of Luke; (2) an understanding of the cultural and historical milieu of the text; (3) an ability to interpret Luke critically through literary, socio-cultural, historical, and other methodologies; (4) interaction with multiple interpretive perspectives; (5) an ability to reflect theologically on major themes within Luke, such as salvation, wealth, discipleship, etc., assessing how the text confronts faithful readers and the church.

COURSE FORMAT: The course meets daily (5 days a week) for a four hour session over a two week condensed quarter for a total of 40 hours of classroom instruction for lectures, facilitated group-work, and discussion of assigned reading and assignments.

REQUIRED READING:

Either the CEB, NRSV, or TNIV translation of the New Testament.

ASSIGNMENTS AND ASSESSMENT:

  1. Approx. 1,000 pages of required reading

  2. Directed Critical Responses: 5, 1 page, single-spaced reflections on a major Lukan theme and assigned readings (20%). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes #1, #2, #4, and #5].

  3. Interpretive Analysis: Students will select one of several assigned passages and, after a close reading of the text, provide a 1,000-1,250 word assessment of major textual elements, issues, and questions (due: Aug 18th, 20%). [This assignment is related to learning outcome #3].

  4. Reflection on Lukan Salvation: Each student will develop a 1,250-1,500 word reflection paper on Lukan soteriology, its presentation in the text, related conceptions, and contemporary significance for the church. This should not require research outside of class material (due: Aug 25th, 20%). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes #1, #4 and #5].

  5. Exegetical Research Paper: a 2,500-3,000 word research paper building on analysis from the interpretive analysis (due: Sept 12, 40%). [This assignment is related to learning outcome #3].

PREREQUISITES: None.
