CN564: PASTORAL COUNSELING IN THE ASIAN AMERICAN CONTEXT. Kirsten Sonkyo
Oh.
DESCRIPTION: Pastoral counseling as a specialized ministry within the field of
pastoral care will be explored didactically and practically in preparing
persons who plan to do pastoral counseling and pastoral psychology. A survey of
counseling theory from an integrative perspective will be discussed with
attention to practical guidelines and principles of pastoral counseling within
a culturally sensitive and meaningful paradigm for the Asian American
context.
SIGNIFICANCE FOR LIFE AND MINISTRY: We live in a multicultural society and in
an increasingly smaller world. Migration forces and demographic changes around
the world and in America specifically have made the likelihood of
cross-cultural ministry a reality. The need to understand cultures within which
we minister is critical for effective ministry in the twenty-first century, as
well as the need to be aware of one's own culture and its impact on the
expectations of counseling outcomes.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
- Students will better understand and interpret individual experience, family
relationship patterns, culture, and congregational life.
- Students will develop listening skills.
- Students will demonstrate a deeper need for empathy with persons to whom
they minister.
- Students will learn to identify their own limitations in counseling, and
the ethics of the counseling relationship.
- Students will identify resources within their communities with whom they
can work together.
- Students will understand self-awareness and will be more committed to
self-development and self-care.
COURSE FORMAT: The class will meet weekly for three-hour sessions. Lectures,
discussions, audio-visuals, case studies, experiential exercises, triads
utilizing counseling skill training processes, and practice in simulated
counseling circumstances will integrate theory, theology, and practice.
