CH504: MODERN CHURCH HISTORY. Nate Feldmeth.
DESCRIPTION: This course will trace the development of Christianity from the
dawn of the seventeenth century to the present day. Emphasis will be given to
key personalities, ideas, and movements that have shaped Christian belief and
practice in Europe, The Americas, Africa, Asia, and Oceana. Major developments
in missions, revivalism, liberalism, modernism, fundamentalism, Pentecostalism
and ecumenism will be examined with a special emphasis on how these movements
were interpreted in their own time and by later Christian writers.
SIGNIFICANCE FOR LIFE AND MINISTRY: To minister effectively in any context
requires an understanding of the forces that shaped the modern church. Students
will gain an awareness of key ideas and movements necessary for understanding
and working in the church in North American and overseas.
LEARNING OUTCOMES: Students can expect (1) to gain a general working knowledge
of the history of the church in the modern era; (2) to come to understand and
think critically about major theological developments, key personalities, and
movements that have shaped the modern church; and (3) as the end result of this
study, to gain a deeper appreciation of the breadth, unity, and diversity of
the church.
COURSE FORMAT: The course will meet weekdays (4 hours per day) for two weeks--a
total of about 38 hours. Class time will focus on lectures, discussion of the
reading assignments and selected film clips.
