OT567: ISAIAS (TEXTO EN ESPAÑOL) [Isaiah (Spanish Text)]. Moisés López.

DESCRIPTION: The primary goal of this course is to develop exegetical skills through study of the Spanish text of the Book of Isaiah, in light of particular contextual aspects. Towards this goal, texts will be analyzed using various methodological principles. Specific attention will be given to systematizing various aspects of the exegetical study, discerning these aspects in modern writings and thought, and using these texts in devotional life.

SIGNIFICANCE FOR LIFE AND MINISTRY: Exegetical skills are basic to thorough interpretation of biblical texts in ministry. Such skills enable informed evaluation of commentaries and other Spanish translations, and the use of exegetical results as the basis of theological and hermeneutical reflections.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Students who successfully complete this course will have demonstrated that they

  1. have a knowledge and understanding of the book of Isaiah, its literary features, its historical and cultural context, and the way it illustrates the genres of prophecy;

  2. can offer an exegesis of passages from the book(s) in question in light of a range of appropriate interpretive approaches, including ones that take account of the diversity of contexts from which the text can be read;

  3. have articulated some reflection on the significance of this part of the Bible for their discipleship and ministry.

COURSE FORMAT: We will meet once a week on Tuesdays from 1:00pm-3:50pm. In the first two hours of each session we will discuss issues about the background of the book of Isaiah as well as questions on methodology and the reading assignments. The last hour of class we will discuss issues about the text, comparing different translations and assessing its theology and application to our days. Instruction will be in Spanish. [NOTE: Students from OT506 (Isaiah: Hebrew text) will also meet with this class for the first two hours of each class, from 1:00pm-2:50pm.]
