CH502: HISTORIA MEDIEVAL Y LA REFORMA [Medieval & Reformation History]. Emilio A. Núñez Jr.


DESCRIPTION: This survey course is an overview of the history of Christianity from Gregory the Great through the Reformation, from a global perspective. The course will focus on the principal events, movements, people, and theological issues of the period, with a particular focus on the Western church.

SIGNIFICANCE FOR LIFE AND MINISTRY: The course introduces students to historical and theological materials so that they can develop a broader perspective of their own Christian faith. Students need to understand and appreciate their own confessional traditions within the larger scope of their development in the medieval and reformation periods.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: In this course students will:

  1. Students will demonstrate knowledge of the most important events by developing a historical outline of the principal events of Christian history from the medieval period through the Reformation.

  2. Students will demonstrate that they are familiar with the leading figures and movements of the period and their influence.

  3. Students will demonstrate that they understand the development of the major theological themes of the period and their implications for Christian theology today.

  4. Students will demonstrate their ability to read church history critically, and its impact on their understanding of the church today.

COURSE FORMAT: The class will meet Fridays 5:00-8:50 p.m. and Saturdays 8 a.m. - 3:50 p.m., Jan. 15-16, 29-30; Feb. 12-13, 26-27. The focus will be divided between historical overview and theological issues during the weekend session. Classes will include lectures, student presentations, group discussions, and video presentations.

  1. Assigned readings and weekly quizzes (20%).

  2. Five reflection papers (1-2 pages each) on primary sources (30%).

  3. One essay (5-8 pages) on a topic addressed in class (30%).

  4. Final examination (20%).

PREREQUISITES: Spanish.

RELATIONSHIP TO CURRICULUM: Meets MDiv core requirement in Church History "B" (CHB).
