PR500: HOMILÉTICA (Homiletics). Jorge Oscar Sánchez.
DESCRIPTION: This course is designed to address the theology of preaching and
the art and craft of sermon design and delivery. The nature of preaching, the
person of the preacher, and principles of sermon construction will be
discussed.
LEARNING OUTCOMES: As a result of taking this course, students will
- Gain an intellectual understanding of preaching as a spiritual,
hermeneutical, and communicative and missional task (Cognitive).
- Gain greater appreciation of the preaching styles common in the Latino
community and the ability to evaluate various preaching styles, including their
own (Affective).
- Gain the ability to develop effective sermons in a consistent manner and
learn to prepare a detailed preaching plan for their church and/or ministry
(Skills).
RELEVANCE FOR MINISTRY: The proclamation of the Word is the primary means of
communicating the Christian faith. Preaching is central in the Latino church.
Biblical preaching strengthens the church and its witness in the world.
COURSE FORMAT: The course will include both class time and practicum
components. The practicum component will involve preaching two sermons
(videotaped), on which students will receive feedback from fellow students and
the professor. The class will meet twice weekly for two-hour sessions.
REQUIRED READING:
- Course reader and manual. Students are required to obtain from
Fuller's bookstore this course reader and manual, which contains all the
required reading from several authors and recordings of the different types of
sermons that students must listen to.

ASSIGNMENTS:
- Development and preaching of two sermons, including submission of
exegetical and sermon notes.
- Reading all the required materials and listening to all the sermons
provided by the professor.
- Analysis of two sermons by well-known Latino preachers.
- Weekly quizes on the topics covered in class.
- The final grade will be based on the professor's assessment of the
sermons preached in the class (40%); written assignments (40%); weekly quizzes
(10%), attendance, attitude, and participation in classes (10%).
PREREQUISITES: NE502. Spanish.
RELATIONSHIP TO CURRICULUM: Meets MDiv core requirement in Preaching and
Communication (MIN2).
FINAL EXAMINATION: None.
