CF505: TEACHING THE BIBLE. Julie Gorman.
DESCRIPTION: This course is designed to help one learn how to teach God's Word
to youth and adults and how to equip others to do so. It will not cover
teaching children. The course is intended for all who desire to impact the
kingdom through teaching and through learning to work with the Holy Spirit in
teaching God's Word. Therefore, this course is designed to enhance one's
ability to teach and to bring awareness of one's call to teach. The following
topics will be covered: the Book we study and teach; the way we interpret the
Bible (a review of hermeneutics); the people we teach (a view of teaching and
learning); the way we teach (guidelines, method, and skills of effective
teaching); how the Bible affects our approach and actual teaching
experiences.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
- Cognitively: the learner will be aware of concepts for teaching the Bible
which include knowing how to interpret the text, to select topic and theme, to
design outcomes, and to lay out a plan for teaching it to others.
- Affectively: the learner will become enthused about creating and carrying
out experiences for teaching the Bible, coming to love the text, being
receptive to its truth and wanting to teach others the same.
- Behaviorally: the learner will begin to act in accordance with insights
taught during the ten weeks of this course, actively designing and teaching two
learning experiences.
- Existentially: the learner will become a person who demonstrates his/her
understanding of and commitment to the teaching of the Bible, refining those
commitments by constant usage and internalization.
RELEVANCE FOR MINISTRY: This class provides insight into, enthusiasm and
confidence for, and actual experience in teaching the Word of God for the
purpose of building up believers and enabling them to practice the truth of it
in their lives. The teaching of the Bible informs the church, guides its
activity, and calls for response among believers.
COURSE FORMAT: The class will meet twice weekly for two-hour sessions.
Attendance is mandatory and will affect one's grade. Active
learning--discussion, small group processing, lecture, demonstration, and
actual experience in teaching--are included.
