DESCRIPTION: This course (offered pass/fail for 2 units) is designed to
provide an internship in a church, parachurch, or institutional setting that
will assist the student in developing competencies in the ministry of
evangelism.
LEARNING OUTCOMES: Students who complete this internship will (1) have a
clearer sense of pastoral identity; (2) be better able to function in the
pastoral role of evangelism; (3) have grown in their moral and spiritual
integrity as a follower of Jesus Christ; (4) be better able to engage in
theological reflection on evangelism; (5) appreciate the importance of
theological reflection in Christian ministry; and (6) be more committed to the
church.
RELEVANCE FOR MINISTRY: This course offers an introduction to the tasks and
skills of ministry as an evangelist whether as a full-time evangelist,
parachurch evangelist, Minister of Evangelism, or a pastor who is concerned
about developing evangelistic outreach in a congregation.
COURSE FORMAT: The course has three primary components: practical ministry,
supervision, and theological reflection. The student spends at least ten hours
each week for nine months (three academic quarters) in the church, parachurch,
or institutional setting involved in specific ministry assignments agreed upon
by the supervisor and student, and approved by the instructor and the Office of
Field Education. One hour each week is to be spent with the approved on-site
supervisor to discuss (a) professional direction, evaluation, and overseeing of
the student's ministry; (b) theological reflection and discussion of
topics related to ministry as identified by the student and supervisor; (c)
support and prayer.
