CH502: MEDIEVAL AND REFORMATION HISTORY. Katherine H. L. Ahn.

DESCRIPTION: This is a survey course that covers the development of Christian doctrines and the formation of various confessional groups in the Western theological tradition from the sixth through the sixteenth centuries. The class is conducted mainly in the Korean language for students whose native tongue is Korean.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: This course has several objectives that can assist our students in their Christian lives and ministries. First, the study of the Western theological tradition and the historic formation of the Protestant churches should enable students better understand their own doctrinal and confessional identities. Second, students can be more effective communicators with less prejudice toward or misconceptions about those who belong to the same confessional background as well as those who belong to different Christian traditions. In addition, the historical development of the Christian churches in various historical and cultural contexts should nurture a deeper perspective about the church's relation with human society, politics, culture, personalities, and how the church should function in different contexts.

RELEVANCE FOR MINISTRY: This course can assist students in forming their self-identity and confessional identity through knowledge of the historical development of the church and its doctrines. As students become conversant with the history and doctrines of the Western church, they can contribute to the current theological debates with deeper perspectives and to the life of Christian churches with wisdom gained through a knowledge and understanding of history.

COURSE FORMAT: The class will meet weekly for three-and-a-half hours for lectures and discussions.
