CF505: TEACHING THE BIBLE. Julie Gorman.


DESCRIPTION: This course is designed to help one learn how to be an effective teacher of God's Word to youth and adults and how to enable others to do so. It will not cover teaching children. The course is intended for all who desire to impact the kingdom need to develop their teaching abilities and learn how to work with the Holy Spirit in effectively teaching God's Word. Therefore, this course is designed to enhance one's spiritual gift of teaching and to bring awareness of one's call to teach. The following topics will be covered: the Book we study and teach; the way we interpret the Bible (a review of hermeneutics); the people we teach (a view of teaching and learning); the way we teach (principles, method, and skills of effective teaching); and actual teaching experiences.

COURSE OBJECTIVES/LEARNING OUTCOMES:

  1. Cognitively: the learner will know principles for teaching the Bible which include knowing how to interpret the text, to select topic and theme, to design outcomes, and to lay out a plan for teaching it to others.

  2. Affectively: the learner will become enthused about creating and carrying out experiences for teaching the Bible, coming to love the text, being receptive to its truth and wanting to teach others the same.

  3. Behaviorally: the learner will begin to act in accordance with the principles of teaching the Bible throughout the ten weeks of this course, actively designing and teaching two learning experiences.

  4. Existentially: the learner will become a person who demonstrates his/her understanding of and commitment to the principles of teaching the Bible, refining those principles by constant usage and internalization.

RELEVANCE FOR MINISTRY: This class provides insight into, enthusiasm and confidence for, and actual experience in teaching the Word of God for the purpose of building up believers and enabling them to practice the truth of it in their lives. The teaching of the Bible informs the church, guides its activity, and calls for response among believers.

COURSE FORMAT: The class will meet twice weekly for two-hour sessions. Attendance is mandatory and will affect one's grade. Active learning--discussion, small group processing, lecture, demonstration, and actual experience in teaching--are included.

ASSIGNMENTS:

PREREQUISITES: None. It is recommended that the student have taken either CF504 or CF500 and also have background in biblical interpretation, such as NE502.

RELATIONSHIP TO CURRICULUM: Meets MDiv core requirement in Christian Formation and Discipleship (MIN 4).

FINAL EXAMINATION: None.
