CH553/853: CALVIN & CALVINISM SEMINAR: CALVIN'S CONTROVERSIES. John L. Thompson.

DESCRIPTION:

This is a doctoral seminar for PhD and ThM students, open to a limited number of advanced MA and MDiv students with permission of instructor. The course is designed to introduce students to the thought of John Calvin in his sixteenth-century context by reading and analyzing selected writings. The 2005 seminar will focus not on his commentaries or Institutes, but on his controversial writings, including apologetic, polemical, and catechetical writings. More detailed information about the course is available at http://www.fuller.edu/sot/faculty/thompson_john/CH853syllabus.pdf.

RELEVANCE FOR MINISTRY:
Calvin's theology was formed in the crucible of sixteenth-century conflicts, all of which bore ministerial, ecclesiastical, exegetical, and doctrinal dimensions. Students concerned to understand the Reformed tradition of Protestant theology can benefit from the various ways in which Calvin stands as a model of the pastor-theologian and thereby become better formed theologically--that is, pastorally--by studying his life and writings with care so as to learn from his successes and failures.
