PM541: AFRICAN-AMERICAN MISSIONAL CHURCH LEADERSHIP. Larry J. Lloyd.

DESCRIPTION:

This course will introduce students to the importance of developing new leadership in the African-American church for the Post-Civil Rights Era. Special attention will be given to training African-American leaders to form missional congregations in order to equip and motivate them to serve in their communities. Theological reflection on the pastoral role requires attention to cultural matters like Hip-Hop, women's ordination, demographic changes, and emerging leaders. We will also give attention to the challenges of incarceration, sexuality and homophobia, H.I.V. AIDS., and more. The course will help students reflect theologically and personally on vocation.

RELEVANCE FOR MINISTRY:
(1) Cognitive: students will acquire historical and conceptual models of African-American leadership, and information about the contextual challenges to the African-American church; (2) Affective: students will deepen appreciation for previous leaders and increase commitment to African-American churches as the primary source of leadership for the community;
(3) Skills: students will enhance their ability to do research and historical analysis and to engage in theological and vocational reflection relevant to congregational leadership.
