NS501: NUEVO TESTAMENTO 2: HECHOS-APOCALIPSIS [New Testament 2: Acts-Revelation].

DESCRIPTION:

This is designed to provide a general introduction to the second major section of the New Testament. It includes discussion of the traditional elements of an introduction course such as historical, literary and social background, discussion of the content, structure, authorship, date, provenance, and the possible use of sources, in addition to the theologies of the various writings. The course plans to be is both historical and exegetical. The course will discuss the book of Acts, the epistles (both the Pauline and the General letters), and the apocalypse. Special attention will be dedicated to the study of Paul, his life and context, and his theology. Discussion will include attention of the development of early Christianity, specially in the context of Jewish and Greco-Roman religious context.

RELEVANCE FOR MINISTRY:
The knowledge of the content and context of these documents of the New Testament is essential for preaching, teaching and the development of an informed theology for ministry and personal spiritual formation. The study of these texts in their context can be seen as a paradigm for the hermeneutical enterprise of Christian leaders and their relevance for the church today.

COURSE FORMAT:
The course will meet weekly for three-and-a-half-hour sessions. The course will include lectures, presentations, and discussion. Active constructive participation of the students is encouraged.

  1. Two short papers on assigned subjects (such as letter writing in the Greco-Roman context; the religious context of the New Testament, or an issue related to a particular letter)

  2. Final exegetical essay paper on an assigned passage on a letter of Paul

PREREQUISITES:
Spanish (must be able to speak and read).

RELATIONSHIP TO CURRICULUM:
