CH502: MEDIEVAL AND REFORMATION HISTORY. Katherine Lee Ahn.
DESCRIPTION:
- This is a survey course that is designed to cover the development
of Christian doctrines and formation of various confessional groups in the
western theological tradition between the sixth and the sixteenth century. By
providing the basic understanding on the development of the church and its
doctrines, this course should help the students to form their self and
confessional identity as individual Christians and Christian leaders. As they
become conversant with the history and doctrines of the western church, they
should become aware of the historical background behind the current theological
debates and develop a sense of direction for Christian ministries and missions.
This class is conducted mainly in the Korean language to serve students whose
native tongue is Korean.
RELEVANCE FOR MINISTRY:
- This course should help the students to form their self and
confessional identity as individual Christians and Christian leaders by
providing a basic understanding on the development of the church and its
doctrines. As they become conversant with the history and doctrines of the
western church, they should become aware of the historical background behind
the current theological debates and develop a sense of direction for Christian
communities.
COURSE FORMAT:
- The class will meet daily in four-hour sessions for lectures. The
Korean language will be used for all lectures, discussion, and
assignments.

ASSIGNMENTS:
- (1) Completion of readings, including reading of the Medieval
and Reformation sections of Gonzalez prior to the beginning of the class.
Exams will test the students' knowledge from the readings, as well as from the
lectures. (2) One class presentation on a person, event, or movement. Not to
exceed 10 minutes (25% of grade). (3) One short paper on a selected primary
reading due August 31, 2004 (5-6 pages; 25% of grade). (4) A midterm in the
last two hours of the first week (25% of grade). (5) A final exam in the last
two hours of the second week (25% of grade).
PREREQUISITES: None.
RELATIONSHIP TO CURRICULUM: Meets M. Div. core requirement in Church History
"b" (CHB).
