FE503A/B/C
Kernaghan
FE503A/B/C: PART-TIME INTERNSHIP. Ronald Kernaghan.
DESCRIPTION:
- This course is the part-time three-quarter FE 2 internship designed
to give students supervised applied experience in a church, para-church, or
institutional setting.
RELEVANCE FOR MINISTRY:
- This course is designed to provide a means for students to increase
their skills and experience in a particular area of ministry, as well as to
meet the requirements which many denominations have for a candidate's ministry
preparation.
COURSE FORMAT:
- The student begins the internship process by contacting the Office
of Field Education for preregistration materials and instructions on arranging
an internship. After an internship site has been selected, the student must
schedule an enrollment interview with Field Education. The course has three
primary components: practical ministry, supervision, and theological
reflection. The student spends ten hours each week for three academic quarters
(nine months) in the church, parachurch, or institutional setting involved in
specific ministry assignments agreed upon by the supervisor and student, and
approved by the Office of Field Education. One hour each week is to be spent
with the approved on-site supervisor. The agenda should address a) professional
direction, evaluation, and overseeing of the student's ministry; b) theological
reflection and discussion of topics related to ministry as identified by the
student and supervisor; c) support and prayer.
ASSIGNMENTS:
- Completion of a Learning Agreement by the supervisor and intern, to be
turned in to the Field Education Office by the end of the second week of FE503A
(the first quarter of the internship).
- Completion of Evaluation Reports by the student and the supervisor, to be
turned in by the end of the tenth week of EACH quarter.
- Meeting during the first quarter (FE503A) with the Director of Field
Education, or other faculty member as selected, for a progress report on the
internship.
PREREQUISITES:
- None. However, note that a setting for the internship experience
and the selection of an approved supervisor must be arranged and approved
prior to registering for the internship. Also, the student must
participate in a Field Education Preparatory Workshop prior to actual
involvement in the internship.
RELATIONSHIP TO CURRICULUM:
- The three-quarter sequence, FE503A, B, and C, meets the FE2 Field
Education requirement for the M.Div (MIN 7). It is an elective for the M.A. in
Theology (General Format) and meets requirements for some M.A. in [specialized
ministry] degree programs. The course is offered pass/fail for two units.
FINAL EXAMINATION:
- None. Evaluation is through completion of the nine-month internship
as specified in the individual learning agreement and through completion of all
assignments listed above.
