CH573: EL CRISTIANISMO EN AMÉRICA LATINA. Pablo A. Deiros.

DESCRIPTION:

Christianity in Latin America is a rapid interpretative survey of the history of Christianity in Latin America from the sixteenth century to the present. The readings and class discussion, given in Spanish, are designed to present the major persons, events, and movements in the history of Christianity in the Latin American continent.

RELEVANCE FOR MINISTRY:
This course should enable students to think historically, that is, to place characters and movements, as well as theological concepts and literature, within a chronological and cultural context. The attempt will be made to move beyond the what of church history, to the why and wherefore.

COURSE FORMAT:
The course is arranged in two units: The Planting of Roman Catholic Christianity and The Planting of Protestant Christianity. In each unit, we will seek to relate historical data to contemporary issues and events. The class will meet in a lecture-discussion format. Emphasis will be placed in the development of Evangelical Christianity, and time will be allowed for class discussion. The class will be conducted as a two-week intensive, meeting Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays for three-hour sessions and on the middle Saturday for six hours of class.
