ST877/577: SOTERIOLOGY (6 Units: 383 hours/4 Units: 190 hours). Veli-Matti Kärkkäinen.
DESCRIPTION: This doctoral seminar, open to master’s level students (by the professor's approval), is designed to investigate and discuss critically what in theological tradition is named ordo salutis, the "order" of salvation. It includes topics such as election, calling, new birth, justification, sanctification, union, and glorification. Whereas contemporary international and ecumenical theology still embraces the traditional categories, it is not any more interested in fine-tuned, often abstract, distinctions in the "order." Rather, there is a lot of discussion about wider, more holistic and more comprehensive aspects of Christian salvation, including healing, empowerment, reconciliation, peace, and integrity of communities and environment. Discussing both traditional and contemporary soteriologies, this seminar will also have a comparative theology dimension: alongside Christian tradition, it studies the notions of "salvation" as submission in Islam. Where relevant, the seminar will also engage interdisciplinary approaches.
LEARNING OUTCOMES: Students completing this course will have demonstrated their ability to (1) identify major choices and agendas in various traditional and contemporary soteriologies; (2) analyze critically and assess their contributions and liabilities; (3) offer a reasoned response to various proposals in light of tradition and current intellectual milieu; and (4) begin to formulate their own approach to doing systematic/constructive soteriology.
RELAIONSHIP TO PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES: “Students will have demonstrated capacities for historically informed theological and ethical reflection with a particular attention to the doctrine of salvation, soteriology, in its historical, contemporary, and interfaith aspects.”
COURSE FORMAT: This class meets once per week for three-hour sessions for a total of 30 hours of student presentations and critical discussion.
