NE527: NEW TESTAMENT EXEGESIS: THE GOSPEL OF MARK (4 Units: 165 hours). James A. Davis.
DESCRIPTION: This course will offer a detailed study of the Greek text ofthe gospel of Mark with particular attention given to the socio-historical background, the literary genre, structure and style, the canonical context and the theological emphases of the gospel.
LEARNING OUTCOMES: Having successfully completed this course, students will have demonstrated the ability (1) to interpret Markwithin its socio-historical, literary, and canonical contexts; (2) to identify central issues in the critical study of Mark; (3) to articulate primary theological and ethical concerns of Mark; and (4) to use Greek and Greek based language tools for interpreting the text; and (5) to interpret this text for faithful use of Scripture in their own lives and ministries.
COURSE FORMAT: This class meets once per week for three hour sessions for a total of 30 hours of classroom instruction for lecture and discussion plus 10 hours of directed learning activities for a total of 40 instructional hours.

Completion of a weekly exegetical journal interacting with selected portions of the Greek text and readings from the course texts [500 words/week for 8 weeks for a total of 4000 words] (40%). [This assignment is related to learning outcome #s 1-5]. [45 hours including 10 hours of DLAs].
An exegetical research essay [1500 words] on an assigned text (40%). [This assignment is related to learning outcome 1 and 3]. [15 hours].
PREREQUISITES: LG510 or LG512A/B or LG512; BI500 or NE502; NT500 or NS500 or NS501.
