NE517: NEW TESTAMENT BOOK STUDY: GOSPEL OF LUKE. Stephen E. Young.
DESCRIPTION: A close reading of selected passages in the Gospel of Luke, with special attention given to literary, socio-historical, and theological understandings of the first half of the Lukan narrative comprising the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles.
LEARNING OUTCOMES: Having successfully completed this course, students will have demonstrated the ability (1) to interpret Luke within its socio-historical, literary, and canonical contexts; (2) to identify central issues in the critical study of Luke; (3) to articulate Luke’s primary theological and ethical concerns; (4) to use English based language tools for interpreting Luke; and (5) to interpret Luke for the faithful use of Scripture in their own lives and ministries.
COURSE FORMAT: This class meets once per week for three-and-a-half hour sessions for a total of 35 hours of classroom instruction for lecture and discussion, plus 5 hours of directed learning activities for a total of 40 instructional hours. A high degree of student participation is expected.

ASSIGNMENTS AND ASSESSMENT:
Approximately 1,100 pages of required reading (depending on texts chosen). Students are expected to prepare for each meeting of the course by carefully reading the assigned texts in Luke and comparing their observations with at least one of the required commentaries. Two interpretive exercises on assigned texts (1,300 words each, or about 2 pages single-spaced) (30%). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes 1-2, 4-5.]. [15 hours preparation and writing].
