NE527: NEW TESTAMENT EXEGESIS: 1-3 John (4 Units: 160 hours). James A. Davis.


DESCRIPTION: This course will offer a detailed study of the Greek text of1-3 John, with particular attention given to the socio-historical setting, canonical location, theological confession, and ecclesiological vision of these letters.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Having successfully completed this course, students will have demonstrated the ability (1) to interpret 1-3 Johnwithin its socio-historical, literary, and canonical contexts; (2) to identify central issues in the critical study of 1-3 John; (3) to articulate primary theological and ethical concerns of 1 John; and (4) to use Greek based language tools for interpreting the text; and (5) to interpret this text for faithful use of Scripture in their own lives and ministries.

COURSE FORMAT: This class meets once per week for three-and-a-half hour sessions for a total of 35 hours of classroom instruction for lecture and discussion plus 5 hours of directed learning activities for a total of 40 instructional hours.

ASSIGNMENTS AND ASSESSMENT:

  2. Completion of a weekly journal interacting with selected portions of the Greek text and readings from the course texts [200 pp/week for a total of 2000 words] (10%). [This assignment is related to learning outcome #s 1-5]. [20 hours].

  3. Completion of 5 exegetical diagrams interacting with the Greek text and commentaries which are required reading for our class (40%). [This assignment is related to learning outcome 2, 4 and 5]. [20 hours, including 5 hours of DLAs].

  4. An exegetical research essay [1500 words] on an assigned text (40%). [This assignment is related to learning outcome 1 and 3]. [15 hours].

PREREQUISITES: LG510 or LG512A/B or LG512; BI500; NT500.

RELATIONSHIP TO CURRICULUM: Meets the Biblical Language Exegesis requirement in the 120 M.Div. program. Meets the NTE in the 144 M.Div. Program.

FINAL EXAMINATION: None.
