OT567: HOSEA (ENGLISH TEXT) (4 Units: 160 hours). Cynthia L. Engle.


DESCRIPTION: This course will examine the Book of the Prophet Hosea in the Old Testament, focusing attention on the historical, literary, canonical, and theological aspects of representative portions of this book.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Students who successfully complete this course will have demonstrated (1) that they know how to interpret and understand the basic literary and historical features of the Book of Hosea; (2) the ability to interpret scriptural texts, and to use scholarly resources both critically and constructively; and (3) competence in reflecting theologically upon the central themes of prophetic literature in general, on Hosea in particular, and in articulating the ethical implications inherent in prophetic indictment and consolation.

COURSE FORMAT: Ten class sessions over a ten-week period, 3.5 hours each, will provide 35 hours of in-class instruction, plus 5 hours of directed learning activities, for a total of 40 instructional hours. Class time will be devoted to text analysis, lecture and explanation, creative participation and discussion by the students, together with DVD and Power Point illustration.
