NE567: 1 AND 2 CORINTHIANS (4 Units: 160 hours). Jim Davis.


DESCRIPTION: An in-depth study of the context and content of the two canonical letters of Paul to the church at Corinth. Appropriate interpretative methods will be introduced and employed enabling the student to understand the original meaning and continuing significance of the Paul’s words for theology, personal discipleship and ministry.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Students successfully completing the course will be able to (1) Know the contents, outline, and message of 1 & 2 Corinthians; (2) Interpret the meaning of the text through reading and critical interaction using historical, literary, sociological, rhetorical and canonical critical methodology; (3) Read 1 & 2 Corinthians theologically and understand its theological thrusts; (4) See clearly 1 & 2 Corinthians as both human word and Holy Scripture; (5) Read 1 & 2 Corinthians as formative texts for Christian character and discipleship.

COURSE FORMAT: This class meets once per week for three-hour sessions for a total of 30 hours of classroom instruction for lecture and discussion plus 10 hours of directed learning activities for a total of 40 instructional hours.

REQUIRED READING: A total of 811 pages of reading is required.

ASSIGNMENTS AND ASSESSMENT

  1. Readings in 1 & 2 Corinthians and texts will be assigned. Students will be required to keep and turn in a reading journal (2 pp/wk = 20 pp) (20%). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes 1-5]. [20 hours]

  2. There will be 4 homework assignments; 2 of 4 will be graded for credit by class peers and professor (3 pp/per assignment) (10% per assignment, 40% total). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes 1-5]. [25 hours, including 10 hrs of DLAs]

  3. A final paper will be assigned (12-15 pp) (40%). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes 1-5]. [30 hours]

  4. 811 pages of reading in required texts. [This assignment is related to learning outcomes 1-5 and contributes to completion of the previous three assignments]. [55 hours]

PREREQUISITES: None.

RELATIONSHIP TO CURRICULUM: Counts as a biblical elective for the 120 MDiv Program and the MATM and MAICS Programs (Winter 2010), and the NTBK requirement for the MAT Program (Winter 2010).

FINAL EXAMINATION: None.
