CN520: PASTORAL COUNSELING. Steven Spidell.
DESCRIPTION: Pastoral counseling is a specialized ministry within the field of pastoral care. This introduction will explore foundational issues such as human (psychosocial and spiritual) development, assessment and counseling responses, including attention to special topics and situations, viz., crisis, grief, individual and family issues, medical treatment choices.
SIGNIFICANCE FOR LIFE AND MINISTRY: To pastor effectively is to be available to people in crisis, in growth and spiritual development, and in the changes that are a constant throughout the life cycle. The pastoral counselor is capable both of offering effectual therapeutic intervention and support as well as facilitating the well-being of the people of God.
LEARNING OUTCOMES: Students completing this course will have demonstrated (1) a better understanding of and an ability to interpret individual experience, family relationship patterns, and social connections; (2) basic skills in counseling individuals and families (3) the ability to empathize with people to whom they minister; (4) more motivation to engage in ministries of giving care, prevention education, and the healing of persons; and (5) commitment to self-development and self-care.
COURSE FORMAT: The format will include lecture, discussion, skill training processes through simulated counseling circumstances will integrate theory, theology, and practice (‘clinical improv’), and personal awareness and insight (‘The Circle’). Classes meet three hours a night, for a total of 30 hours.

ASSIGNMENTS AND ASSESSMENT:
Completion of reading at least 1200 pages (20%)
Attend lectures, participate in discussion, and actively engage in pastoral counseling exercises (25%)
Attend one session of an open 12-step group (AA, NA, etc.) and write a report with theological and psychological analysis of your observations and experience (5 pages). Paper is due by February 14th. (15%)
Write a 20-25 page paper on a specific area of pastoral counseling such as depression, alcoholism, divorce, etc. The paper should include psychological/system/development analysis of issue, therapeutic possibilities/limitations/resources; spiritual/Biblical perspectives, case management; footnotes; bibliography (at least 10 sources). Final Paper due by March 21, 2014. (40%)
