CN520: PASTORAL COUNSELING. Steven Spidell.
DESCRIPTION: Pastoral counseling is a specialized ministry within the field of pastoral care. This introduction will explore foundational issues such as human (psychosocial and spiritual) development, assessment and counseling responses, including attention to special topics and situations, viz., crisis, grief, individual and family issues, medical treatment choices.
SIGNIFICANCE FOR LIFE AND MINISTRY: To pastor effectively is to be available to people in crisis, in growth passages, and in change throughout the life cycle. The pastoral counselor is capable of both offering effectual therapeutic intervention and support as well as facilitating the pastoral care of the people of God surrounding the counselee.
LEARNING OUTCOMES: Students completing this course will have demonstrated (1) a better understanding of and an ability to interpret individual experience, family relationship patterns, and society; (2) basic skills in counseling individuals, and families (3) the ability to empathize with people to whom they minister; (4) more motivation to engage in ministries of giving care, prevention education, and healing of persons; & (5) more commitment to self-development and self-care.
COURSE FORMAT: The format will include lecture, online demonstrations, discussion, and triads utilizing counseling skill training processes, and practice in simulated counseling circumstances will integrate theory, theology, and practice. The course will meet twice weekly for five weeks in 3 ½ hr. hour sessions. Classes meet 6:00 p.m. – 9:30 p.m., Monday/Wednesday, June 25 – July 25. No class on July 4. NB: Plan your schedule carefully. This is an intensive course. Absences cannot be excused.

ASSIGNMENTS AND ASSESSMENT:
1.
Attend
lectures, participate is discussion, and actively engage in pastoral counseling
exercises.
2.
Attend
one session of an open 12-step group (AA, NA, etc.) and write a report with
theological and psychological analysis of your observations and experience (5
pages).
3.
Write
a 20-25 page paper on a specific area of pastoral care and counseling such as
depression, alcoholism, divorce, etc.
The paper should include psychological/system/development analysis of
issue, therapeutic possibilities/limitations/resources; spiritual/Biblical
perspectives; footnotes; bibliography. Final Paper due September 14,
2012.
