NE506 1 Peter (Greek Exegesis)

 

DESCRIPTION: This course is an exegetical study of the letter of 1 Peter, which includes interpretation of selected passages of the Greek text with lecture and discussion of the basic themes of the letter.

 

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Students successfully completing this course will have demonstrated (1) a fundamental knowledge of the content and structure of 1 Peter; (2) the ability to use resources that inform our understanding of the text; (3) skill in translating and interpreting the text; and (4) an ability to reflect theologically upon the central themes of the letter.

 

RELEVANCE FOR MINISTRY: 1 Peter is a crucial New Testament text for reflection on the nature of Christian ministry, suffering, election, ethics and Christian conduct.

 

COURSE FORMAT: The course will meet weekly for a three and one half hour session. Class time will be devoted to close readings of the Greek text, discussion of key exegetical points, discussion of the theology of the epistle and its application to Christian faith.

 

REQUIRED READING:

1 Peter in a good modern translation (NRSV; TNIV; CEB) and a critical text of the Greek New Testament (either a UBS 4th edition or Nestle-Aland 27th edition).

ASSIGNMENTS:

1. Regular attendance at, preparation for, and participation in class discussions of exegesis of the assigned passage, including translation of the Greek text (10%).

2. Class Small-Groups discussion on interpretation and application of exegetical material (10%).

3. Five brief papers (2-3 pp.) devoted to five different exegetical topics in the Greek text of 1 Peter (50%).

4. Exegetical paper (12-15 pp.) of assigned passage from the Greek text of 1 Peter, including theological application (30%).

 

PREREQUISITES: NE502 and (NS501 or NT500)

RELATIONSHIP TO CURRICULUM: Meets the MA program requirements for New Testament book study (NTBK) and the NTE requirement for M.Div.
