FT515: MARITAL THERAPY. Gloria J. Gabler, PhD.

 

 

DESCRIPTION:

This course provides an overview of leading approaches to marital/couple treatment. The course addresses theories of marital interaction and approaches to clinical treatment. Assessment and treatment issues involving domestic violence are reviewed.

 

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES:

1.       Students will gain an understanding of how to assess marital interaction related to family of origin and attachment experiences.

2.       Students will learn how to assess and intervene in couple conflict constructively.

3.       Students will gain skills in building marital relationships through therapeutic goals.

4.       Students will gain skills in applying a theological framework to relationships and couple therapy.

5.       Students will gain an understanding of the assessment and treatment of domestic violence.

6.       Students will gain an understanding of diversity (cultural and sexual orientation) in working with couples.

 

RELATIONSHIP TO SCHOOL AND SEMINARY LEARNING OUTCOMES:

1.       Demonstrate the ability to provide excellent preventative and or transformational mental health services to church and community

2.       Graduates, in their scholarly and clinical work will be equipped to apply the insights of Christian theology along with the knowledge and techniques of the social and behavioral sciences.

3.       Graduates will demonstrate the ability to identify critical issues of diversity and make appropriate responses.

 

COURSE FORMAT:

This four unit course will meet once a week on Thursdays from 7:00 to 10:00 for 10 weeks. Sessions will emphasize lecture, demonstration, and discussion. Course evaluation will be based upon written assignments and class projects.
