FT562: MEDICAL FAMILY THERAPY. Brie Turns, PhD

 

 

DESCRIPTION:

This course is designed to provide an overview of the concepts and applications of the family therapy metaframework known as medical family therapy (MedFT). The two major areas of focus will be: a) working collaboratively with families and their healthcare practitioners and b) understanding the effects of illness on the family system and vice versa.

 

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES

Students who successfully complete this course will:

1.       Be knowledgeable of models of interdisciplinary collaboration in medical and non-medical settings.

2.       Understand the biopsychosocial/biopsychosocial-spiritual systems approach to working with families affected by illness.

3.       Be able to apply models specifically related to working with families affected by acute, chronic, and terminal illnesses as well as end of life issues in their clinical practice.

4.       Have increased awareness about how our belief systems influence our understanding of illness and health.

The course learning outcomes above serve the School of Psychology’s outcome of training students in the following ways:

1.       Demonstrate the ability to provide excellent preventative and or transformational mental health services (to church and community).

2.       Graduates will be prepared to serve underserved populations and to integrate in their practice and personal lives the disciplines of compassion and charity.

 

COURSE FORMAT:

This 4 unit course will meet once a week for 3 hours. Class sessions will include lectures, discussions, video viewing and group activities.

Additional reading materials will be made available through e-reserves on Canvas.

 

ASSIGNMENTS:

Students will be expected to complete the assigned readings prior to class for participation in thoughtful and interactive discussions. Grades will be based on attendance and assignments.

 

PREREQUISITES:

Open only to students in MFT program.
