ST574: THEOLOGY OF C.S. LEWIS (4 Units: 160 hours). Nathan P. Feldmeth.


DESCRIPTION: Students in this course of study examine the life and principal theological ideas of C. S. Lewis as they are expressed in various types of literature including: fiction, apologetics, ethics and theological essays, as well as film.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Students completing this course will (1) become well acquainted with the key elements, both factual and thematic, of the major works of C.S. Lewis; (2) be able to interpret Lewis’ theology contextually and developmentally; (3) be equipped with the tools for both a critical and sympathetic appraisal of Lewis and the breadth, unity and diversity of his contributions to Christian thought.

COURSE FORMAT: This class will be in an intensive format for three weekends (Friday nights and Saturday) for a total of 30 hours in the classroom that will include, lecture, viewing films and discussion plus 10 hours of directed learning activities for a total of 40 instructional hours.

ASSIGNMENTS AND ASSESSMENT:

  1. 1275 pages of required reading [This assignment is related to learning outcome #1,2] [85 hours].

  2. A reading journal tracking pages read by date, key topics, themes etc. as a reference guide for further study. (20%) [This assignment is related to learning outcome #1,2] [10 hours, including 5 hours of DLAs]

  3. Three five-page (minimum) thesis papers: #1 dealing with theological themes in a major work of fiction; #2 dealing with a central theme in Lewis’ apologetical writings; and #3 dealing with Lewis’ position on a key ethical issue or biographical theme. (25% each, 75% total) [This assignment is related to learning outcome #3] [30 hours]

  4. Moodle-based student forums based on viewing recorded presentations on C.S. Lewis and his works. Students may participate in written forums or live forums hosted by the professor on Zoom. (5%) [5 hours of DLAs]

PREREQUISITES: None.

RELATIONSHIP TO CURRICULUM: Elective. Option to meet the TH4 requirement in the 120 MDiv Program.

FINAL EXAMINATION: None.
