PM504: PASTORAL CARE (4 Units: 160 hours). Bradley Gordon Howell
DESCRIPTION: PM504 is a survey of pastoral care, focusing on the ideas, skills, and personal development necessary for a student to learn pastoral care. The course prepares students to give care both in congregational contexts and in contexts that go beyond the congregation (e.g. nonprofit organizations).
LEARNING OUTCOMES: After successful completion of this course, students will be able to say (1) I have developed an understanding of pastoral care to individuals, families, and congregations, in the contexts of worship, community life, and daily pastoral routines; (2) I can empathize with people to whom I minister; (3) I am more committed to self-development and self-care; (4) I have learned how to engage in theological reflection on the praxis of pastoral care; (5) I understand the rules of mandated reporting.
COURSE FORMAT:This class meets once per week for three-hour sessions for a total of 30 hours of classroom plus 10 hours of directed learning activities for a total of 40 instructional hours. The class will include lectures, and small group discussions. Appropriate faculty members will provide short video segments along with related reading content for certain aspects of the course. Each of these modules would include (a) a video portion where the professor discussed the key issues, (b) a set of readings that covered the psychological issues, the pastoral issues, and the theological issues, and (c) a case study to which the students would respond.
REQUIRED READING: ~1250 pages (1021-1075 pages from the required reading section and 225 pages from one of the books in the additional and recommended reading section).
