PR525: ESSENTIALS OF BIBLICAL PREACHING (4 Units: 160 hours). Peter Rodgers.
DESCRIPTION: A homiletics course for those in the MA programs who also feel called to preach. This course is designed to provide an introduction to the theology of preaching and to the art and craft of sermon design and delivery. It will provide the student with the opportunity to study such matters as the calling and character of the preacher, the significance of preaching, and the principles of sermon preparation. It will help the student develop skills in preparing for the task of preaching and for the development of expository sermons. This course will include a practicum component.
LEARNING OUTCOMES: Students successfully completing this course will have demonstrated (1) conviction that the biblical text is the proper foundation for preaching; (2) an ability to frame coherent content for sermons; (3) improvement in delivery skills; and (4) the skills to evaluate one’s own preaching/speaking, as well as that of others.
COURSE FORMAT: This class meets once per week for three-hour sessions for a total of 30 hours of classroom plus 10 hours of directed learning activities for a total of 40 instructional hours. The course will include both lectures and practical components. In addition to reading and discussion, students will prepare and preach sermons which will receive feedback from class members

ASSIGNMENTS AND ASSESSMENT:

Book reviews (1 page) on assigned books. (20% of grade). [This assignment is related to student learning outcome #1-4]. [4 hours].
Attendance and participation in class discussion and sermon reviews. Unexcused absences will result in reduced grade. (20% of grade). [This assignment is related to student learning outcome #1-4].
Preparation and preaching of two original sermons; one from manuscript, one from outline notes. Exegetical study notes are to be included with second sermon. (50% of grade). [This assignment is related to student learning outcome #1-4]. [60 hours].
Participation in directed learning activities: Viewing or listening to three culturally significant sermons (via the Internet) and writing a two-page reflection. (10% of grade). [This assignment is related to student learning outcome #1-3]. [10 hours].
PREREQUISITES: At least one course in Biblical Studies
RELATIONSHIP TO CURRICULUM: This course meets the Communication requirement (COMM) in MA programs and also meets the four-unit requirement for CO500 and CO503 in any applicable pre-2007 MA program. This course will not meet the MIN2 requirement in the MDiv.
